Nathan Hale vs Franklin write-up 1/10/17

Postby insidejob on Tue Jan 10, 2017 11:56 pm

Being a basketball purist it's not always easy to watch
glorified AAU games, but Hale is within walking distance, and I
know some of the kids on their team, so I have now seen 5 of their games.

Tonight Coach Craig Jackson had Franklin playing hard from gun to gun.
They dove, drove, scrapped for long rebounds for 32 minutes yet still
lost by 36; or about how many MP scored = 42. I don't
think he missed a FT and had about 7 dunks, a few of them coming on
the best teamwork I've seen from Hale all year. He also had a Wali
Joneish four pointer. For the kids who don't get that reference, time
to Google or YT; it's good to mine, keeps it in your mind!

Hale's best possession of the FH was a series of perimeter passes vs
Franklin's zone and JP passing up a wide open trey to dump it inside
to Keegan for an uncontested layin.

The best play of the second half, and this was a tough decision, was
JP's Kevin Loveish outlet, off a hard bounce nonetheless, whereupon
PJ jai alai scooped it and crammed. The catch was nimble and gathering
for the yak was equally skilled.

Hale came out in a 1-2-2 zone to control Marquan Williams penetration,
and although Franklin missed a ton of early treys, they were within
14-11 late in the 1Q when they missed a wide open chance for a tie.
On the next possession MP did his split-legged Wali and it was 30-15
when the young Porter, freshman Coban, fed MP for a monster mash,
ballooning the count to 46-22 late in the 2nd qtr. Tre'Var Holland's trey
ended the half at, 49-22.

I was about resigned to leave to help a pal coach his kids' team
but I stuck around to what many will leave the game talking about,
which was sad. At 61-29, MP went up strong off an ORB when Naji Ibrahim
grabbed him extra hard (NI had been warned a couple times previously
by Bob Ames' crew) and MP hesitated a moment before deciding he had
had enough, took a couple steps, and shoved Naji pretty hard.

Luckily, it didnt escalate too badly, though both benches emptied,
including coaches, and some ignorant fans. Fortunately, there
was a solid SPD presence and things calmed down after 30 seconds.

Here's what I feel should've happened after watching ball for
50+ years. MP should've been ejected. And the Franklin player
probably. But I guessed the star power of BRoy and MP would
prohibit that. I was right.

Now, before anyone get's panty bunched, I think MP is an awesome
young man, haven't seen him disrespect the game, officials, opps, or
anyone all year. But by the dint of force of shoving Naji, it
could've easily erupted into total chaos. And for a fleeting
moment, it tottered on exactly that. He needed lesson learned.
And BRoy needed to sit him for a variety of reasons. Number two
being the game was over and he was risking injury, like the
idiotic decision Mike Tomlin made leaving Big Ben in the game
and having him pass in a contest that was over--how's the boot
fit, Ben?

Anyhow, sorry for the tangent.

Karma was sifting through the gym because shortly after the
Incident, MP scored once again and slammed the ball down hard
with two hands. He had been warned earlier about doing it,
and I honestly thought the second time he wasn't mad or trying
to show anyone up, it was more a follow through of exuberance.

BUT .... he was T'd and ejected and he walked on his own to
the locker room, which I believe in the WIAA, he is supposed
to remain on the bench.

Anyhow, the game morphed into slop and Hale ended up winning,
91-55.

I am not sure if anyone will beat them in Wash now. Garfield,
at full strength, won in OT at Sealth. RB doesn't seem like
they are improving.

JP was a leather gobbling machine tonight, no idea how many
boards but every time I looked up he secured another and
was tossing his velvety outlets. He drilled a couple deep
ones again and is constantly improving. I am intrigued to
see how his game translates to the Pac-12. I am not sure
I have ever seen a kid his size with such range and, though
he isn't Usian Bolt, he is cagey and knows how to utilize
angles and loft his southpaw release. For all the deserved
hype/praise his older brother gets, Jontay is worth a
heaping set of wind when analyzing his skill set too!

Til next time.

PS: Vatrevyon Garner, 6'4" five-man for Quakers, had 3 flushes and
played fearlessly. His best dunk was in FH when he pump faked
JP out of his path on a Close-out and went BL vs the zone and
punched it with ultimate authority.

pss: Can't close without a nod to Tre'Var, unsung Elmer's to team.
PJ had some super ball bounce going tonight too!

If both benches emptied over a minor shoving incident all players and coaches should be suspended for multiple games. Total lack of
discipline.

Most of Metro mens basketball is a world unto itself - different rules and different expectations. If the coaches on both benches and administrators don't see an issue - nothing will happen.

Agreed. Self reporting does not apply to multiple Metro league schools.

I do see changes coming from the Wiaa.

If Porter was ejected, he will miss the next two games.

I would think a high profile recruit that has received a ton of positive press would have the common sense not to shove a player. The game was a blowout. Smh.

Add his brother to the list of being ejected. As far as self reporting goes, METRO, when your District AD McCurdy is the WIAA boras president, there's an issue.

Sounds like McCurdy needs to go. The BS with the
Beach and Garfield hoop programs should have been
cleaned up by the Metro League and Wiaa years ago.
