Fall Camp Day 2

So far other than DL attrition (Tapa, Bartley,Bender) there's not a lot of hot stories other than we look good. We were thin and are thinner in the middle of the DL but Ekulale looks the part and you know Mata'afa is legit.

Some things worth watching on offense. The interior line battles at Center and Left Guard, receiver, and where all the running backs fit in. Harrington is going to have a role.

Defense, starters look basically set at most positions.

Of the newcomers, Calvin and Taylor appear to have jumped out like you would expect. We look fine at receiver but we know the best will play.

I know they are downplaying it...but Tapa was a huge loss for the DL. He did a decent job in limited reps last year when the Cougs loaded their 'heavy sets' in goal line and short yardage circumstances. Ekuale is a terrific player...and we need him to stay healthy in a big way if the 3-4 is going to have merit. Hercules requires that the NT is doubled...so Ekuale will need to have a good season early on generating penetration in order to garner the attention the will lift double teams on Hercules. He is smallish as 255 and needs gaps shoots, as head up he often gets stuffed in the 300 vs. 255 tilts. A kid I expect to blow up soon is Woods a LB who I saw some in HS...really, really a good one. Hopefully the rotations and packages of 3-4, 2-6, and occasional 4-2-5 will keep the limited number of 285 + DL guys healthy.
