Tracy Claeys hired as DC

Postby Coug Tracks on Mon Jan 08, 2018 7:27 pm

This looks like a great hire by Leach. Claeys has done a nice job as DC at UMinn. and believes in getting speed on the field. So he's not only legit in terms of coaching but a good fit for what we did under Grinch and personnel. He's more of a 4-3 guy but has played with multiple fronts. Definitely had traditional DTs but who doesn't? He's known as someone that coaches "them up" as well.

"The fastest guys we can put out there and the most of them, because it’s all about speed," Claeys said after Saturday’s spring practice. "Speed for coverage and speed for getting to the quarterback, but we can’t get seamed on the running game, so that is what we are playing around in.

"Maybe it will be two (defensive) tackles or one d-tackle and 10 others," Claeys said. "Whatever we can do to help us out."

Claeys has worked with Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who ran an havoc-inducing, 3-4 defense with the Super Bowl champions last season.

It doesn't appear Claeys coaches a position so we will need that 10th spot for a position coach if Claeys is DC only.
Apparently Leach was after Tony White to coach secondary (formerly SDSU corner/recruiting) but he took a job with ASU a few days ago.

Looks like a promising hire! He's got a lot of experience, although not at exactly what I'd call elite college football programs. Still, I'm optimistic. Go Cougs

Claeys has some "baggage" from the boycott situation but while he made a mistake I believe it was one of not doing his due diligence properly. He won't have those responsibilities as a DC.

Claeys believes in speed and discipline and Minnesota had good defenses under his leadership. He's at least on par with Grinch if not an upgrade. Should be a good fit from what Grinch brought us and also with Leach. He seems to like being in the background for the most part.
